Walton Goggins has revealed that he was bitten by an actual snake while filming on The White Lotus.

Goggins – who is currently appearing on both The White Lotus season three and The Righteous Gemstones season four concurrently on HBO – recently appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live! to promote both shows.

While speaking to Jimmy Kimmel about his experience filming The White Lotus, Goggins revealed that he was bitten by a snake while filming the show’s third episode. In the third episode – minor spoilers here – Goggins’ character gets high and starts freeing snakes.

To set the scene, Goggins reveals to Kimmel that he’s “terrified” of snakes: “I don’t just have a phobia, it’s like a missing link when it comes to snakes… there’s something, like, genetically wrong with me when it comes to snakes.”

Right before shooting the scene, the set’s snake handlers pointed out to Goggins which snakes were poisonous and not to touch them. Due to his fear of snakes, Goggins began pulling a non-venomous snake out of its casing when things took a turn for the worse: “As I was pulling the snake out, he didn’t want to come, right? And so the snake turns around and he bit me. I haven’t told that story to anybody.”

Goggins then explained that he wishes he “could’ve been cool” but freaked out and began screaming. However, the shoot still had nine hours or so remaining for the day, so the team applied some Neosporin on him and he continued filming.

The following day he received a call from a producer on the series: “‘Hey, you know what, we’ve been thinking about it and I don’t know, we’re thinking maybe you should go to the hospital.’ I said, ‘for what? You said the snake was non-venomous, right? Am I dying like a slow death?’”

He ended up being okay and getting a shot as a precaution.

In a four-star review of The White Lotus‘ third season, Nick Levine wrote for NME: “A little sweetness definitely helps to balance out the prevailing saltiness. As the season progresses, the sneaky intricacy of White’s plotting begins to yield surreal, shocking and genuinely hilarious moments. No one can write a scene where one character pretends not to remember another quite as exquisitely as White. Tanya may be gone, but this transgressive soap opera remains unique and completely jaw-dropping.”

In January HBO confirmed that The White Lotus has been renewed for a fourth season. Details surrounding season four have yet to be announced but it will welcome fans of the hit series “to a new destination”.
